What are the most common symptoms of the flu? I've been feeling dizzy with coughing spells and occasional uncontrollable shivers. Someone told me it might be flu, but I always thought there was stomach discomfort and vomiting involved. You people ARE doctors, right?

Thank goodness that's over. Now, to answer your question. There are different types of the flu, and your symptoms are indicative of one type. Usually, the strains that include nausea and stomach pain are lumped into the general category of "stomach flu". Most strains complete their cycle within 24 hours, so I suppose this answer is moot, as you're probably already better.
