Why is Nebraska playing Miami for the BCS championship?

And why is Florida ranked higher than Tennessee when Tennessee BEAT Florida at Florida?

The Experts Respond:
 > Albert Einstein
Nebraska? Miami? I didn't know either school had a respectable superconductivity lab.

 > Steve Spurrier
Do what? Albert, what in the blue blazes are you talking about?

 > Albert Einstein
This fine young man asked about the Bardeen/Cooper/Schrieffer theory of superconductivity, did he not? I'd think Bell Labs would be researching circles around those two schools...

 > Steve Spurrier
Oh, for heaven's sake, Al, he meant the Bowl Championship Series. You know, the method for choosing the champion in college football?

 > Albert Einstein
Well, that explains it. I never bother to keep up with college football. Now, hoops is where it's at, w3rd. UK be breakin' it down proper.

 > Tubby Smith
Remember, UK is "America's Next Great University"!

Who thought that slogan up?

 > Steve Spurrier
I WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS DISRUPTION!!!...ahem... anyways, here's how the BCS works. Each team's BCS ranking is based on many statistics, the most prominent of them being the strength of their schedule, the strength of each of their opponents' schedules, wins versus the top 15 teams, and margins of victory. The statistics for each team arefed into several computers, with each statistic being weighted differently on each computer. Once all the computers have ranked the teams, the rankings are averaged.

That doesn't answer his question, though. Tennessee beat Florida, why are they ranked lower?

 > Phillip Fulmer
That's what I'm sayin'.

 > Steve Spurrier
The BCS system weighs late-season losses very heavily, under the belief that the championship should be played by the two best teams at the end of the season, not necessarily the best throughout the season. True, Tennessee did beat us in the Swamp, for the first time in 30 years, I might add...

 > Phillip Fulmer
Who's your daddy, Steve? Who's your daddy?

 > Steve Spurrier
..but, as I WAS SAYING, Tennessee lost the SEC championship game to LSU afterwards, and that was enough to pull them below us in the rankings.

 > Bunsen Honeydew
Steve, what about his first question? Why is Nebraska playing Miami in the BCS championship? If I remember correctly, Nebraska was blown out by Colorado, who wasn't even considered. How can that be justified?

 > Phillip Fulmer
I guess computers just ain't as smart as we people.

 > Megaman
...ahem...

...grr...
